If you find yourself in trouble as a tourist while you are abroad, there are a few ways for you to seek help. Better still, there are a number of things you can do pre-departure to avoid finding yourself in strife at all.
If you are arrested or find yourself in trouble, contact your countries’ local Consul immediately. The Consul will be able to direct you to legal representation and can contact your next of kin. The Consul cannot however, arrange for your release, pay bail, or influence your sentence. The Consul can ensure that you are treated in a fair and just manner according to the laws of the country that you inhabit, but keep in mind that you will be treated and punished according to local law.
