Off-Season Vacations: Pros & Cons for Budget Travelers

rainy clouds over the lakeVacation during an off-season can net major savings — off-season or low-season travel may save you nearly 25 percent on accommodations, Forbes reports. If you’re full of wanderlust, yet restricted financially, keep reading to learn how an off-season trip can be your next big adventure that doesn’t have to break the bank.

When Is Off-Season?

This depends on where you’re traveling. Off-season for Europe is the wintertime because of colder temperatures. In the Caribbean, off-season corresponds with hurricane season and roughly runs from June to late November. For Thailand and other parts of southeast Asia, off-season correlates to the rainy season and runs from May to October, broadly speaking.

Low Season Travel: Pros

The main reason people travel in the off-season: Prices. High season prices may be double or triple the cost of low season prices, so a limited vacation budget will stretch further in the off-season. Smaller crowds can also be a selling point for travelers who want peace and quiet when abroad. Additional pros of traveling during the low season include:

  • Cheaper flights — Just as you’ll find hotel rooms cheaper in the off-season, great deals on flights abroad are also offered.
  • Ease of getting tickets to top tourist attractions — You won’t have to fight with crowds during off-season travel. You may have better luck obtaining tickets to high-interest attractions.
  • Greater accommodations selection — Not only will hotel rates be cheaper, but more premium hotels will have rooms for you when you go in off-season.
  • Mingle with locals — When the tourists have all gone home, you’ll be hanging out with locals and can experience the true culture of the places you visit.
  • Safer travel — Bankrate’s Heather Larson suggests that you’ll enjoy safer travel during low season. In tourist season, higher numbers of thieves congregate in tourist areas targeting travelers to steal wallets or perform ATM skimming theft, and they’ll walk away with your debit or credit card number.

Low Seasonal Travel: Cons

While the pros can sound mighty tempting, the following cons may make you just want to have a money-saving staycation:

  • Weather — Snow, sleet, rain, hail, hurricanes, and monsoons — all these weather hazards can contend with your off-season travels. Research typical weather patterns. While it’s unlikely to snow every day in Berlin in the winter, it might rain for an hour of every day in Bangkok.
  • Shorter daylight — In many locations, off-season traveling includes shorter daylight hours, and attractions may close earlier.
  • Fewer tours — During the peak tourist season, you’ll find no shortage of English-language tours in countries abroad. Many operators may close down seasonally because business is slow.
  • Closed for the season — Many major tourists attractions shut down during an off-season. If you have Monet’s garden at Giverny on your must-see list, you’ll need to delay your trip until it opens.
