Let us put "JOY" in your travel!
The opportunity to travel and experience a new culture, city, or country is a gift. Exploring new towns or trying new cuisine will provide us with profound memories. While traveling, it is important to keep some safety tips in mind so that you can enjoy your trip without any issues.
While you are in the process of planning your trip, do some research as to the general safety of your destination. Are there certain towns you should avoid? Should you avoid buses or certain types of cabs? Also, medically speaking, determine if you need any immunizations or if you should bring any prescriptions with you. Before you leave home, scan all of your important documents including your passport just in case you lose anything. Speaking of passports, if you are traveling overseas, make sure your passport is up to date and make sure you don’t need other documentation such as a visa or an international driver’s license. Further, if you will be traveling internationally, consider buying travel insurance to cover medical bills or other potential issues that could occur during your trip. Consider leaving expensive jewelry or anything sentimental at home to avoid the risk of losing or having these items stolen. Finally, leave a copy of your itinerary with a family member or friend and plan to check in with them regularly, especially if you are traveling alone.
Now that you’ve done all the prep work, it’s time to enjoy your trip! When it comes to valuables, only bring what you absolutely need on the trip. Once you are on your trip, bring valuables with you and put them in a secure and hidden place or if there is a safe in your hotel room, consider using the safe (but read reviews from the hotel first to be sure that others haven’t had issues with the safes). We recommend using a money belt for your valuables. Be aware of your surroundings and know who’s around you and where you are. Stay in well-lit and well-traveled areas and if you find that you’ve wound up in a part of town that you don’t feel comfortable, remain calm and navigate back to a safer area. Don’t be flashy with money which can mean not wearing expensive jewelry, hiding expensive cameras, and not doing any ATM transactions unless it’s in a safe area. Also, try to match the locals to the best of your ability. For example, if they don’t wear shorts or short-sleeve shirts, you should do the same.
Traveling the world or exploring a city in the country we live in can provide lifelong memories. Before you leave and during your trip, it’s important to practice these safety tips so as to avoid any issues. If you’ve traveled and have other safety tips that we didn’t include, please share them in the comments section. Happy travels!
